Chub on the Cheese

The recent drop in temperatures had me reaching into the freezer for some home made cheese paste and I headed off down the Warwickshire Avon in search of some big Chub. My target every Winter is to break the six pound mark (my pb being just short of that). A tall order on the river locally with the majority of the fish weighing three or four pounds and a five being a good fish. I know I could venture further afield to give myself more chance of hitting the target but the satisfaction would not be the same so I'll stay local until I crack it.

I love Winter fishing for the solitude. My only company on the whole stretch was a pair of nearly fully grown cygnets and the now common Kingfisher. Call me a miserable Yorkshireman but I go fishing to get away from people(apart from a few fishy buddies), not to be sociable with strangers.

Miserable Yorkshireman!!
The fish were finicky but I did manage to land three Chub, all peas in a pod and all weighing virtually the same, just short of the four pound mark. Good sport as always in the conditions.

Still miserable!!
P.S The car is still there!!

  1. It'll end up in (and polluting) the river then...are police aware of it do you think?

Three fish for 11 or 12 pounds ain't bad either Joe!

  2. I've some in my bait fridge that is nearly two years old :) great bait though isn't it. I'll hopefully start over Christmas for chub, a 5lber would be nice, not quite achieved that yet despite catching hundreds of them probably, as you say they don't get that big in the Avon, a 5lber is a very good fish indeed.

  3. It has police tape all round it so they are aware but it is so difficult to get to that I think it will stay for some time to come.
I'm sure you will get a five with a bit of concerted effort Mick

    1. I'm sure it will come this winter just need to give it a proper go. Christmas and New Year coming up will certainly help as I'm off work for a couple of weeks.

Surprise the car hasn't been set fire too by now. Maybe name and shame the local police / canal and river trust on Twitter with a picture ? That usually gets the action going

    3. The Blythe and the upper Avon mid winter are my tips, Mick. Ask Dan about the upper Avon stretch. He was after a six there after so many fives. Its a bit of a 'guesting' gambit these days now the Cov club have gone down the toilet, but no one seems to mind. Ill be up for it if Dan is. Big perch too...

    4. I do fancy the Blythe for Chub, my sort of river, meant to be big Perch too because of the crayfish. I have seen big Chub where I fish but never banked one as yet, plenty to go at anyway. As Joe says though, be nice to do it on a local water.
